About Kinesis with Katie

Ancient Movement Technologies for the Modern BodyKinesis with Katie is the teaching practice of Katie Vizenor — a certified Pilates instructor, anthropologist, and lifelong student of how human beings move, play and create meaning through movement. The name comes from the Greek word for movement. But Aristotle used kinesis to mean something larger than motion. For him it was the process of becoming—the movement of a thing from what it is toward what it could be. That is what this practice is about. Not exercise. Not fitness in the narrow, modern sense. Movement as a way of becoming more fully yourself.I have studied movement for over thirty years. It began with an anthropology degree and questions that has never left me: How do human beings build community? How do we learn? What role does the body play learning and community formation? How do we use movement, dance, music, and art to make meaning together, to mark what matters, to become who we are?I looked for the answer in cultures throughout history and across the world—the Greek gymnasium, the yogic tradition, sacred and folk dance, the circus. Long lineages of practices that understood the body as a technology for shaping the mind, the spirit, and the community.Somewhere along the way I also became a Pilates professional, with 500 hours of formal certification and years of practice and continuing education credits. I found in that method a place where all of my study could come together: the anatomical precision, the philosophical depth, the discipline, the artistry.Kinesis is my vision of what movement instruction can be when you refuse to separate the body from the thinking, feeling, believing person who lives inside it. These are ancient movement technologies for the modern body—sophisticated, intentional systems that human cultures have refined over thousands of years, brought to the person you are now.In my classes and private instruction, we work on mastering not just form, but understanding why it matters and how repetition, memory and creative play with movement patterns can help us become stronger in body, mind and soul.I teach: small group mat, small group mixed equipment, privates and duets.
